Canadian Weight Loss

Obesity is a growing problem in Canada. In fact, studies have shown that 62 percent of residents in Canada are at an unhealthy body weight. Being over one’s ideal body weight can wreak havoc on a person’s physical and emotional health. Fortunately, changing one’s eating habits and becoming physically active can help a person live a healthy lifestyle.

There is an old adage that says “you are what you eat”. That saying is true because people who fill their bodies with unhealthy foods are very likely to be unhealthy themselves. In order to lose weight and get healthy, a person will have to change his or her diet. A healthy diet is one that is low in saturated fat, sugar and cholesterol.

Reducing one’s intake of red meat, sweets, fried and salty foods is one way for a person to make his or her diet healthier. People should also make sure that they eat plenty of fiber-rich foods. Fiber helps promote weight loss by keeping the body full longer. It also helps eliminate excess waste from the body. Fiber is found in vegetables, whole grains and oats. People should also reduce their caloric intake by 250-500 calories per day.

Exercise not only helps a person lose weight, but it also helps him or her keep it off. Exercise helps create a calorie deficit. Experts recommend being physically active for at least 30 minutes out of the day. Jogging, walking, dancing and playing with children are some great activities to do. It is also important to include resistance training in a healthy lifestyle. Sit-ups, push-ups, pull-ups and weight lifting are examples of resistance training.

Obesity, which is becoming more and more common in Canada, is the biggest threat to a healthy lifestyle. Fortunately this epidemic can be fought by eating right and getting active.
