Conservatives in Canada who’ve been whining about registering their guns should be thankful they don’t live in America where they will soon be required to seek permission to work.
The EEVS [Employment Eligibility Verification System] would require - for the first time - all workers to obtain a federal agency’s permission to work, regardless of citizenship or immigration status. It would create two massive government databases containing the most sensitive personal information on every lawful resident. Every worker would be registered in the two systems with data files tracking every job they ever sought or held. The two systems combine that information with substantial amounts of personally identifiable information, all keyed to a person’s Social Security number.
All employers would be required to participate in a national employment eligibility verification program in an expansion of the faulty but voluntary “Basic Pilot” program. However, no proposals have been brought forth to provide for a secure system; making it likely that the EEVS system would be a ripe target for identity thieves.
Remind me again what it is that right whingers think is so great about the US.
Why isn’t widespread domestic surveillance and neighbourhood “eyes” good enough? Jeez…even the Soviets had a better sense of nuance than this.

Get rid of all those illegals… and watch what happens to the cost of labour and the cost of food —( remember, some 80% of the fruit and veggies picked in the US is done by illegals.) Watch how people will scream about how terrible it is and demand that something be done, when they have to pay $10.00 US for a few stalks of celery, or some apples, or a quart of orange juice. And watch for people to start screaming about the higher costs of child-care, because they can’t hire Conseueala the illegal from Guatamala to work 14 hours a day to nanny their kids anymore.
And this permission to work registry - Wow! I can’t think of a better way to increase under-the-table labour, which will result in lower employment standards overall, and create an even larger black-market economy than already exists.

I really don’t understand what is going on in the US, and I don’t think it’s as simple as left wing or right wing… as you point out, the kind of things the US is doing these days goes against right wing philosophies/ideals. Larger government, bigger deficits, complete monitoring of every aspect of every citizen, illegal spying on the population. Hopefully the next government in the states reverses a lot of these decisions.

The advent of the neo-con take-over of government has completely erased any distinction between left and right in America at a political level. The NeoCons are actually rooted in left-wing ideology via their worship of Straussian philosophy. Most of them are Trotskyites, even if they aren’t aware of it.
In the past few years I have seen the so-called right-wing in the US enact legislation that woud have Joseph Stalin giggling like a school girl. It’s disgusting.
Don’t expect it to get any better with the next administration. I didn’t think there could ever be a more rotten President that William Jefferson Clinton. My friend Billy wrote it first, back in 2000, right after Dubya was elected. “I have no doubt that this presidency is going to be spectacularly rotten” and he was right.
There’s no brakes on the thing anymore. It’s going straight to absolute tyranny. And the pace of it is picking up a lot faster than I would have expected.
The next presidency and Congress is likely to take all the machinery of tyranny that George Bush and the Republic Congress have enacted, and simply fine tune it, and make it more effecient for the purposes of even more draconian, constitution violating, civil liberties destroying effect.
It doesn’t matter whether it’s Hillary or Jeb or even Giluiani or Obama Barak that gets in or which party in Congress will hold the balance of power. Each party has it’s own designs on the destruction of certain rights and freedoms that they deem unimportant to America– and they are working hand in hand — albeit perhaps unintentionally to completely destroy the place like tag-team wrestlers.
Sad to watch. Truly sad.
