I’ve noticed something rather interesting when comparing Canadian and American conservatives. While both groups will smear anyone who speaks out against them, Canadian conservatives have taken the feces flinging to a whole new level by also smearing people for no other reason than being liberal or because it helps them smear the Liberal Party.
For example, take the case of Dr. Sheldon Elman, Paul Martin’s personal physician. Has this man done anything to warrant conservative hostility toward him? No, he’s simply the Liberal Prime Minister’s personal physician. Yet the cons hate him with a passion and will jump on any opportunity to drag his name through the mud.
The same goes for Ajay Virmani, the CEO of Cargojet, who is also having his name dragged through the mud by the conservatives. Why? For no other reason than it helps them smear the Liberals.
Both of these men are not engaged in any activity that should warrant this type of sleazy attack. They’re nothing more than liberal supporters, but clearly that’s more than enough reason for Canadian conservatives to do a driveby smearing on these political non combatents.
Anyway, I emailed Ajay Virmani this morning and alerted him to the vicious smearing of his name taking place on the internet. You should all do the same whenever you come across one of these diseased conservatives smearing someone for no good reason. If we don’t fight back against this type of nonsense it will only embolden these odious pricks to continue doing it. And who knows, maybe a few lawsuits will smarten them up.

I think the problem conservatives have, aside from being out of power for 12 years, is an overwhelming sense of entitlement. I have to admit, even as a life long Liberal, that the current crew in Ottawa is a tad embarassing. The CPC though thinks they should be handed the reins of government just because they showed up. The fact that most Canadians are way, way out of step with them on social issues doesn’t faze them in the least. Once in power they have every intention of stripping away whatever individual rights don’t mesh with their flat earth beliefs. Being, one and all, of superior moral fibre, and washed in the blood of the lamb, they will simply do what they feel is best for us. Debate is not necessary. It’s that stick up the ass moral certitude that makes them so bitter. Still our media has not yet attained the level of The Republican Noise Machine. In that sense, Canada is still blessed!

I contend that in a context where the Alliance-Reform neocons do not control the media as effectively as their southern counterpart, blogs will certainly be a powerful tool used to smear and vilify the opposition. Party members might not do it themselves but as Brock writes as regards the smear campaign that was mounted against him by the conservatives, the Party apparatchiks may not engage in frontal attacks, but they will “covertly [support] sneak attacks by a few publications and writers outside the conservative orbit but known for doing the right’s bidding.”
