From the earlier thread came a complaint:
“Why bother? Just give them to the freepingest of bloggers…either Raymi or SDA and have done with it.”

The bother is to have fun, even if you can’t win it all. Those two blogs may get the most traffic (or maybe not…) again this year, but the point is to generate a huge list of worthy Canadian blogs for people to explore. More than just those two blogs will be highlighted by the awards. There is a blogosphere outside of politics, and there’s one outside of Raymi’s and Kate’s readers as well. Let’s go find them.

You’re not going to convince me. I realise these awards should be fun, but given that popularity and ability to herd support has completely replaced competition based on standards of excellence in practically every aspect of life, I personally don’t support this kind of thing anymore (actually, I never have).

In a media universe where glut has replaced limited access, the imperative should be to highlight what is the best of the best (Kate’s’ not even close to being the best conservative blog…there are plenty of others that are far better and deserve greater recognition). There are just too many of these competitions based on nothing more than popularity or the ability to game the voting process in some way or another…which includes encouraging the Pajamas Media community to vote for you.

Oh, and…*ugh* I went over to the CBA site and saw that Big Blue Rinse is already derailing the process with her marginal ideological propaganda.

…It’s already no fun at all.

If I’m not going to convince you, then why try? I will however counter your assertion that just because a couple of races are in the bag for people you don’t like, that the awards aren’t worth while. Aside from being an orgy of navel gazing, they do lend themselves to spreading knowledge among corners of the blogosphere, about OTHER corners that typically have nothing to do with each other even though we share the same interweb. No one has a chance to beat a few blogs in vote power…this year. However, what will lead readers to new blogs better than a category for Best new blog? Kate and Raymi can’t place first second and third in every category they may be nominated for after all.

You can do that with a google search, by checking blog directories, or by checking out the blogrolls of blogs you like.

I see your point theoretically, but when these awards end up marginalising blogs based on criteria that have nothing to do with their quality, then I think they end being counter-productive.

I’d rather see a juried awards process and yes, truth be told, I’d like to see The Blogging Tories disqualified, simply because I don’t think establishment propaganda and communties of trolls and freepers have any place in the new media.

But I’m not knocking your work on this, so don’t take it as a slag in that respect.

Ti-Guy you just made me throw up in my mouth a little.

  7. Ti-Guy said,

I throw up every time I’m reminded of what is produced by the blog that gets to call itself “The Best Canadian Blog.”

Read the whole post. Savour the invective encouraged and supported by Small Dead Animals. Reflect on it in the context of the recent Ontario Human Rights Commision’s report on assaults against Asian Canadian anglers. Recall that Monte Solberg praised Small Dead Animals lavishly in the past and that this blog was accorded space at the CBC in the last federal election.

She can say what she wants, but no one else is obligated to accord that cesspool of a blog any more status than it has managed to acquire so far by sheer force of simply being shameless.

Bread and Roses calls for a grrlcott of the 2007 CBAs.

  9. Ti-Guy said,

Figures. Ste-SUZANNE cocks up the discussion and the The Bread and Roses vigilantes don’t much target her, but target the whole.

She is never anything but a stick in the spokes and why she’s always welcome to dumb down everything is a mystery to me.
