After I wrote my now infamous “Fuck the Jews” post–a post that was not anti-semitic but a discussion on anti-semitism–it became the basis for a whisper campaign by the right accusing me of being anti-semitic; a campaign I might add that made eventually ended up on the website of a national newspaper when the Globe and Mail’s Dan Cook blogged about it.
Well history is repeating itself as I’m now receiving vile hatemail accusing me of threatening Steve Janke’s children or worse in response to this post on his blog which is based on a lie(1). And this new libelous smear is being spread by rightwing commenters on other blogs in what has become a familiar pattern.
I confronted Janke via email with what was going on and asked him to remove the posts so as to avoid giving this new whisper campaign a foundation on which to grow. Not surprisingly he refused, repeated the specious accusation and then claimed it’s my fault for not dealing with his smear that’s based on a lie.
So I’ve collected up all the relevant material and emailed it to my lawyer with the intention of initiating legal proceedings against Steve Janke and anyone else who propagates this new smear.
(1) Janke’s accusation is based on the lie that Deborah Frischer threatened Jeff Goldstein’s child. She did not in fact, utter any threat.
This seems coordinated. Janke writes that post, Kate shows up at Prog-Blogs and Richard Evans went gunning for me yesterday and today (despite, as far as I know, not having anything to do with him since January).
I think the proto-fascists have adopted the tactic we’re seeing quite bit in the States and which the Deb Frisch/Count Cockula affaire illustrated so well this weekend….bloggity-blah being re-directed into material threats of actual people. That’s what the rethuglicans do, after all, and the CPC supporters are following the script.
Janke’s smear implied that you posed a material threat to his child. That’s a complete fabrication.
If she never threatened anyone, why did you yourself call her comments towards the tyke “death threats”?

Goldstein’s site was down when I wrote the comment and I’d only read a partial accounting of what Deborah had said. I erroneously gave her accusers the benefit of the doubt at the time. When Jeff’s site came back up I was able to read all her comments and determine no actual threat was made.
See, now, there’s a problem with that on 2 seperate levels;
1. You just admitted that you comment on issues without having all the facts.
and
2. You were still giving her support for threats (real or perceived) to a small child. That hasn’t changed. Only your perception of her remarks has changed.

Robert’s misunderstanding of the exact nature of Deb Frisch’s comments and her comments themselves have no bearing on Janke’s insinuation that Robert constituted a material threat to Janke’s children (which is what he more than implied.) a) supported Deb Frisch’s comments
b) supported Deb Frisch’s criminal motivations (child abuse) which I don’t even believe she was expressing, quite frankly. I think she was (legitimately) pissed off by Count Cockula. Then again, she dug her own grave with that. But, she already resigned.

There’s no doubt that remarks that could be construed as libelous are sometimes published in the heat of a flame war. What kind of chilling effect on blogging would follow if we start sueing each other? I’ve seen all kinds of incredible nonsense on the web and keep my salt shaker handy at all times. I’m not a lawyer, Robert, so my non-legal advice is: give as good as you get, then get over it! You’ve got a great blog, and if its sometimes a lightening rod ’cause you really nail someone’s pet piece of bullshit, so be it - keep on keepin’ on!
