BLAHG BITS SEPT. 22/09

Whoops Part 1
Don’t you hate it when you call the number for Maritime lobster aid and get a sex line instead.

Maritime lobster fishermen in need of financial help got a lift of another kind Tuesday when they were directed to a toll-free number that was supposed to detail an aid package but connected them to a lusty sex line instead.

That happens to me three or four times a week.

Whoops Part 2
It’s all just partisan fun and games until somebody inadvertently defunds the entire military-industrial complex.

The congressional legislation intended to defund ACORN, passed with broad bipartisan support, is written so broadly that it applies to “any organization” that has been charged with breaking federal or state election laws, lobbying disclosure laws, campaign finance laws or filing fraudulent paperwork with any federal or state agency. It also applies to any of the employees, contractors or other folks affiliated with a group charged with any of those things.

In other words, the bill could plausibly defund the entire military-industrial complex. Whoops.

Murdered Over A Can Of Tuna
This is why vigilante justice must never be allowed to take root in our society.

A 61-year-old Winnipeg store owner has been arrested and charged in the death of 29-year-old Geraldine Beardy.

Police allege Beardy was confronted by the man, whose name has not been released by police, after she was caught trying to steal a can of luncheon meat worth $1.49 at a Sherbrook Street convenience store in Winnipeg on Sept. 13. She was assaulted before she fled to a nearby residence, police said…

Beardy, a mother of three, lapsed into a coma after being hit with a bat, Keno said.

The Origin Of Stupidity
A righteous smackdown.

THE FOXES ARE NOW MONITORING THE FOXES

Peter Worthington has a good article–I know, I too can’t believe that I’m putting “Peter Worthington” and “good article” in the same sentence–on how the Harper government is undermining civilian oversight of the military.

A funny thing happened on the Canadian military’s way to be more accountable to the public and Parliament — civilians have been replaced by serving or retired military officers.

Retired Col. Michel Drapeau, Canada’s reigning (only?) expert on military law, is uneasy at the demise of civilian involvement in oversight organizations put in place after the abortive Somalia commission 12 years ago…

The three oversight bodies have no power over the military except to reach findings and make recommendations. By militarizing these institutions, the “appearance” of independence and impartiality is gone.

After campaigning on a promise of more transparency and accountability in government Harper has done nothing but undermine transparency and accountability at every opportunity.

BIGOTRY AND TAXES TOGETHER AT LAST

I’m surprised it took this long but it looks like the teabaggers are finally opening up a branch office in Canada.

It’s fitting that the first Canadian Tea Party is in London, Ontario, and that I’m one of the speakers…

Reg Cooper Square, behind City Hall

London, Ontario, Canada

“Inspired by the success of the TEA Parties in the United States, it’s time for Londoners — and all Canadians — to take a stand in the Forest City against the mismanagement of our money at any level of government, and inform Canadians on what the bureaucrats are really doing with our money.
“Come and join the Forest City Institute in Reg Cooper Square for music, great speakers, and a rally against high taxes, and tell the government to stop over-spending.

Now I’m not saying that the teabag demonstrations are racist–I’ll leave that to others to argue over–but there is a growing perception that they are. So why would Canada’s inaugural teabag party have a well known racist who rarely, if ever, talks about “high taxes” and “government over-spending” as one of their speakers.
