SUCCESS IN CONSERVATIVE ALBERTA
One in three provincial construction projects cancelled
Many Albertans will be disappointed when the province outlines which road, school and hospital projects will be delayed because of spiralling construction costs, said Calgary’s mayor.
Fund Alberta water plan or face crisis: advocates
Alberta’s water advocates are urging the provincial government to fund its water management plan properly — or face a crisis within the next 30 years.
Calgary retailers scramble to find holiday workers
Christmas may be two months away, but Calgary retailers are already struggling to find enough workers for the busy holiday shopping season.
Oilsands pollution worries Sask., Alberta
Alberta and Saskatchewan have begun trying to figure out how to deal with increased pollution drifting over the boundary between them from rapidly expanding oilsands projects…Figures released last month showed that acid rain, once considered a problem only in the eastern provinces, has begun damaging soils and lakes in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
Alberta boom a bust for customers
Economists say Alberta’s red-hot boom is cooling, but don’t tell that to consumers frustrated by long lineups, uninformed staff and reduced shopping hours.
The province’s labour crunch has spawned soaring complaints from customers angry with waiting to pay for groceries and servicemen who arrive late but not qualified to perform the task at hand.
While the rest of the country envies Alberta, Albertans are faced with more and more problems every day: rising inflation, crumbling infrastructure, environmental damage, growing recklessness and disregard for others and a political system that has given up on even appearing to listen to voters.
Survey finds more homeless people in Calgary
Calgary’s homeless population has reached 3,436 people, according to a survey released Wednesday.
A census taken by the City of Calgary in May found the homeless population has increased by 32 per cent from the last count two years ago.
Crowded Calgary evicts squatters from tent cities
For weeks, the centre, which has sleeping capacity for 1,100 people, has been turning away 125 people a night. By November, when the weather turns colder, Mr. Baldwin expects the number will reach 300 nightly.
Report shows Alberta farmers struggling
Alberta farmers’ incomes have dropped 50 per cent in the last year, leaving some questioning whether they can afford to stay in business.
Funding falls short for school repairs: trustee
School boards in Alberta welcomed Monday’s announcement of an extra $119 million for school repairs, but warned that it’s far less than what’s needed to fix leaky roofs and aging mechanical systems.
Anything goes in race to succeed Klein
Here, where the country’s other hotly contested leadership race is taking place, provincial Progressive Conservatives vying to replace outgoing Premier Ralph Klein would be hard pressed to even be accused of committing a political sin.
Federal Liberals are reined in by detailed and complex rules. But Alberta Tories have one broad rule: There really aren’t any.
This is just a small taste of what happens when you allow yourself to become a one party state that lets the free market run wild.

YUKON GOES TO THE POLLS
Hey, did anyone know that there’s a provincial election taking place in the Yukon today? Me neither.
Anyway, to give you an indication of what the results might end up like, here are last week’s polling results;
- Bill, Steve and Mary support the Yukon Party;
Joe and Karen support the Liberal Party;
Ellen supports the New Democratic Party;
George was undecided.
Yukon Party leader Dennis Fentie is confident he’s garnered George’s support and if so this will sweep his party into another majority government. But Liberal leader Arthur Mitchell is also confident that he’s won over George’s support with his pledge to put whale blubber in every pot.
Results should be available five minutes after Yukon’s polling station closes so I’ll update this post when that happens. Then I’ll update it again after the first round of floor crossing is complete.
Update: 1 hour after the polls closed the results show the Yukon Party leading or elected in 9 ridings with 40% of the popular vote. The Liberals are leading or elected in 6 with 36.5% and the NDP is elected in 2 with 23%. There is still 1 riding to report.
Update II: The final results are;
- Yukon Party: 10
Liberal Party: 5
NDP: 3

IS NORTH KOREA THE MOST DANGEROUS?
Well yesterday we witnessed a masterful display of herd jounamalism with almost every corporate, alternative and amateur media source labelling North Korea as the most dangerous member of the nuclear weapons club.
But are they? Well lets look at the records of the other members.
The US has engaged in numerous acts of aggression since WWII. In fact they’re too numerous to list but a few examples are Vietnam and the current wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. They are the only nation to have actually used nuclear weapons and since then have repeatedly threatened to use them against non-nuclear nations. In addition the US has supported more than a few proxy wars in their fight against whatever the boogeyman of the day was.
Russia has also engaged in numerous acts of aggression post WWII. Afghanistan and their current war in Chechnya are just a couple of examples. And like the US, Russia has supported their share of proxy wars.
As for the other nuclear powers,
- China has Tibet, recently threatened to invade Taiwan and is fighting a proxy war in Nepal;
Britain is involved in Afghanistan and Iraq;
France had Indochina and Algeria;
Israel is occupying Palestinian land and recently invaded Lebanon;
Pakistan and India have been engaged in a low level war for quite some time now.
So what about North Korea? Nothing since the Korean war that ended a half century ago despite the fact that they possess enough conventional artillery to turn Seoul into a smoking crater within a week.
So how exactly does the least aggressive nation of this exclusive club get labelled as its most dangerous member?
