PAID TO VOTE
Warren Kinsella is upset about this today.
The Liberal Party is looking into statements by a Manitoba native chief who says he offered $20 to any member of his reserve who voted in the Liberal leadership race.
Chief Terry Nelson of the Roseau River First Nation said it is band policy to offer gas money to encourage the largely unemployed reserve population to take part in the democratic process.
Now it could be argued that $20 is a little too much for gas money depending of course on how far these voters had to travel to cast their ballots. But I have to ask how is this any different than the practice of having party volunteers drive voters to the polls? Isn’t that in effect paying people to vote by providing them with a free taxi service?

DEFENSE OF BIGOTRY ACT
So it looks like PMS wants to protect his bigoted base from having to soil themselves by interacting with gay people.
The Conservative government is planning measures, including a Defence of Religions Act, to allow public officials, such as Justices of the Peace, to refuse to perform same-sex marriages.
The measures are also intended to protect the free-speech rights of religious leaders and others who criticize homosexual behaviour or refuse to do business with gay-rights organizations, The Globe and Mail has learned.
I don’t have much to add to this other than to say that if a person is hired to do a job then they damned well better do that job or start preparing their resume.

DANIEL PEARL’S KILLER A BRITISH AGENT
I don’t know how this news has been overlooked by nearly all of the blogosphere.
Shortly before Canadians received the news that two more of our soldiers had died, word began trickling out that the man who killed Daniel Pearl was actually a British MI6 agent.
That’s right folks. Apparently Omar Sheikh is a British Agent.
Update: Le Revue Gauche has lots more on this.
